The Volunteer Spirit

That which is not good for the bee-hive cannot be good for the bee.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 6.54

Happy Friday! It is also International Volunteer Day.

We tend to think of the weekend as "me time." Time to disconnect and focus on our pleasure. But the Stoics would argue that the surest path to happiness is actually focusing on the "hive."

Marcus Aurelius constantly reminded himself that he was like a bee. A bee doesn't have a side hustle. A bee doesn't try to outsmart the other bees. A bee just does bee stuff, because that is what makes the hive thrive.

The Stoic secret is realizing that your own well-being is tied to the well-being of your community. You cannot be a happy person in a miserable house.

So, as you head into the weekend, ask yourself: What can I do for the hive? It might be volunteering, or it might just be doing the dishes without being asked.

If it's good for the hive, it's good for you.

Stay hungry. Stay wise. Eat brekkie.
