The Progress Report
Suppose I were talking with an athlete and said, 'Show me your shoulders,' and he were to reply, 'Look at my jumping-weights.' That’s quite enough of you and your weights! What I want to see is what you’ve achieved by use of those jumping-weights.
Show me the… Virtue muscles!
Collecting philosophical quotes (the "jumping weights") is easy, but Epictetus demands real proof of progress, the work of the prokoptôn—the aspiring practitioner.
Progress isn't measured by how many books you own, but how you apply your skills when confronting adversity.
You must acknowledge that you are striving for steady, incremental improvement toward the unreachable ideal of the Sage.
Concentrate on choosing to take the next appropriate step.
You must correct yourself; self-discipline is an active process of correction.
Try this today: Don’t just read the wisdom today; apply it! Pick one principle (like emotional restraint or proper assent) and use it actively. That application is the only way to produce true proof of our practice.
Until next time, Stoics…
