If your inbox looks anything like ours this morning, it is currently screaming at you to buy a television the size of a billboard or a toaster that connects to Wi-Fi. It’s the Super Bowl of consumerism.

The Stoics weren't against nice things. Seneca was one of the wealthiest men in Rome; he probably would have appreciated a good discount on a high-thread-count toga. But the Stoics were strict about who was in charge: you, or your stuff?

The moment you feel anxiety because you might "miss out" on a deal, the object owns you. Today, enjoy the sales if you need them. But remember: the best thing you can add to your cart is the freedom of knowing you don't need any of it to be happy.
