The Otter and the Universe

Meditate often on the interconnectedness and mutual interdependence of all things in the universe.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 6.38

Did you see the news from California earlier this month? A sea otter pup named "Caterpillar" was lost and crying for its mom. Rescuers spent hours playing recordings of the pup’s voice until the mother surfaced and reunited with her baby.

It’s a heartwarming story, but it’s also Cosmopolitanism in action.

The Stoics believed the world was one giant city (a Cosmopolis). They believed that because we all share a spark of reason, we are all connected—humans, animals, and nature alike. When we care for the world around us, we aren't just being "nice." We are keeping the cosmic city functioning.

The rescuers didn't have to save that otter. But they recognized that a small act of care restores a bit of order to the universe.

Your task today: Find one small way to take care of your corner of the Cosmopolis. Pick up a piece of trash, water a plant, or just call your mom.

Stay hungry, stay wise.

You should journal more. I can help with that.
